D Larsson McCanna

D Larsson McCanna is a craftsperson, illustrator, and designer living and working in Southern California. They hold a B.A. from UCLA’s school of Theater, Film, and Television and are finishing their MFA at UCI. Their credits include Men on Boats (UCI, 2023), The Effect (UCI, 2022), Human Error (UCI, 2021), The Tempest (UCLA Student Shakespeare Company, 2019), and OMA (short film by Monika Ivonne).

Larsson McCanna enjoys projects that engage their sense of fantasy and wonder and challenge their creative thinking. Their most eccentric credit is on Thumb Wars: The Thighs of Skyskipper, where they earned the honorary title of “Tiny Specialist” from director, Steve Oedekerk, for crafting a range of miniature props. During the pandemic year they fabricated costume armor pieces for the art installation piece,Theatre In Flux: The Armour of El Henry, at the Beall Center. Embracing their love of costume crafts, they have built hats for four UCI productions and taken on a range of crafts projects, from dyeing and distressing to airbrushing and mask making.

Throughout their development as an artist, Larsson McCanna has cultivated a passion for sustainability. Their first steps into the theater world were made in a thrifted costume, and they seek out opportunities to build designs which incorporate found objects, like The Armor of El Henry.

Their illustration work includes theoretical designs for stage, film, and opera–a longtime love–as well as freelance commissions for fantasy character art.
